Johnny Rodriguez, a groundbreaking figure in country music and one of its first major Hispanic stars, has passed away at the age of 73 on May 9, 2025. Born in Sabinal, Texas in 1951, Rodriguez endured personal tragedies in his youth, including the loss of his father and brother, which ultimately led him down a path where his musical talent was discovered—while singing in jail. His distinctive voice captured the attention of influential figures in the industry, propelling him to Nashville and then into stardom in the 1970s.

Rodriguez earned six #1 hits and over 20 Top 10 songs, blending traditional country with Spanish lyrics, thereby opening the genre to Hispanic audiences. Notably, his hits included ‘Ridin’ My Thumb to Mexico’ and ‘You Always Come Back (To Hurting Me),’ many of which he penned himself. Though his popularity waned in the late 1980s, his influence persisted. In 1998, he faced public scrutiny after fatally shooting a man in what he believed was self-defense; he was acquitted.
