Joey Santiago on Pixies’ Journey and Their Long-Awaited Manila Homecoming

Ahead of their first-ever show in Manila on May 10, 2026, Pixies guitarist Joey Santiago opened up about the band’s enduring influence, creative evolution, and his emotional ties to the Philippines. Santiago, who is Filipino-American, recalled his early years in Boston when he handed out cassette tapes in hopes of getting noticed. Despite the rejections, his determination eventually led to the Pixies’ success, spanning four decades and ten albums.

Santiago reflected on the band’s early days in Boston’s lively club scene, where constant live performances built their reputation. Known for their dynamic ‘loud-quiet-loud’ sound, the Pixies inspired generations of alternative rock bands. Santiago discussed how the group absorbed influences from The Beatles, The Who, and The Velvet Underground but filtered those inspirations through their unique approach.
