The story of Astrid Kirchherr and Stuart Sutcliffe, often referred to as the “fifth Beatle,” is both romantic and tragic. Their relationship began in 1960 when Astrid, introduced to The Beatles by her then-boyfriend Klaus Voormann, was immediately captivated by Stuart. Despite a language barrier—Astrid spoke little English, and Stuart no German—they formed a deep bond. Stuart became enamored with European art and culture through Astrid and her friends, known as the “Exies,” while she influenced the Beatles’ early visual style, including their iconic haircuts and fashion choices. The couple quickly became engaged, and Stuart even left The Beatles in 1961 to pursue his passion for painting while staying close to Astrid in Hamburg.
