Salif Keita cancels Montreux Jazz Festival Franschhoek appearance due to health issues

Malian music legend Salif Keita has withdrawn from the inaugural Montreux Jazz Festival Franschhoek, set to take place this weekend, due to a sudden illness requiring an emergency medical procedure. Festival organisers confirmed that Keita will be unable to travel to South Africa and will therefore not perform at the event. Despite his absence, the festival will go ahead with his band performing on Saturday. Vocal duties will be covered by Aicha Mariko and Fatoumata Soubeiga, whom Keita has referred to as his daughters, performing a tribute in his honour. Keita has previously expressed a deep connection to South Africa, citing his involvement in the struggle for Mandela’s liberation and friendships with icons Hugh Masekela and Miriam Makeba. The festival organisers emphasised that the music Keita intended to share will still be presented, reflecting both a dedication to the audience and to the artist’s vision. While his withdrawal is a notable change to the line-up, the weekend’s programme remains largely intact, ensuring that ticket holders still experience a full performance schedule. Organisers have extended well wishes for Keita’s speedy recovery and expressed hope to welcome him to future editions of the festival. This marks the festival’s first African edition, featuring a mix of local and international artists, with Keita’s music remaining an integral part of the event despite his absence.
