Funk Pioneer Sly Stone Dies at 82 After Long Illness

Sly Stone, the influential frontman of the groundbreaking band Sly and the Family Stone, has died at the age of 82. His family announced his passing, attributing it to a prolonged battle with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other health complications. Born Sylvester Stewart, Stone began his musical journey with gospel music alongside his siblings and later became a DJ in California. His band, Sly and the Family Stone, broke musical and social barriers in the 1960s and 1970s with their diverse lineup and fusion of funk, rock, and psychedelia.

Their 1967 hit “Dance to the Music” reached No. 8 on the Billboard Pop chart, and their electrifying performances at events like Woodstock and the Summer of Soul marked defining moments in music history. Despite their success, internal conflicts and drug problems led to the band’s decline in the 1970s. Stone had sporadic solo performances and made a rare public appearance at the 2005 Grammy Awards. In 1993, he and the band were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Before his death, he completed a screenplay about his life, which his family hopes to share in the future.
