Maskandi legend Ihhashi Elimhlophe to document his legacy after Metro FM honour

Veteran maskandi musician Ihhashi Elimhlophe, whose real name is Bheki Ngcobo, is planning to produce a documentary capturing his life and musical journey after receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 Metro FM Music Awards. Speaking to TshisaLIVE, the artist said the recognition affirmed decades of dedication to his craft and inspired him to preserve his story in his own voice. His wife, Linah “Ebony” Khama, emphasised the importance of telling an authentic narrative, noting that a documentary allows him to share his personal experiences and intentions directly, rather than relying on outside interpretations.

Marking 40 years in the music industry, Ihhashi Elimhlophe reflected on his humble beginnings in Empangeni, where he started with a simple three-string guitar. Over the years, he has played a significant role in shaping and promoting maskandi music across generations, collaborating with well-known South African artists such as Jabu Khanyile, Zola, Zskido and Boom Shaka. He stressed that his motivation has always been passion rather than financial gain.

Beyond his own career, the musician has also invested in nurturing young talent through the Ihhashi Movement. The initiative identified aspiring artists in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, helping them access recording opportunities before the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted progress. He acknowledged the financial challenges of supporting emerging artists but remains committed to uplifting others and preserving cultural heritage through music.

Despite his long career, Ihhashi Elimhlophe made it clear he has no intention of retiring. He views music not as work, but as a lifelong calling driven by love and purpose, and aims to continue contributing to the industry while empowering future generations.
