Spotify reports 12% growth in paid subscribers, but profits fall short of expectations
Spotify has announced a 12% increase in paid subscribers, reaching 276 million in Q2 2025. The company also saw a rise in total monthly active users, which grew by 11% year-on-year, reaching 696 million. Despite these positive figures, Spotify’s operating profit came in at 406 million euros, a 52.6% increase, but this was still below the expected 539 million euros. The company attributed the shortfall to increased salary costs, changes in its revenue mix, and higher-than-expected social charges. Spotify’s total revenue for the quarter was 4.19 billion euros, marking a 10.1% increase compared to the previous year. The company continues to be engaged in discussions regarding the impact of AI-generated music, with CEO Daniel Ek maintaining that AI will enhance creativity within the music industry, rather than posing a threat. Spotify remains the dominant player in the music streaming market, but its profit margins are under pressure amid rising costs and shifting market dynamics. These challenges have come into sharper focus as AI-generated music becomes more prevalent, sparking concerns from artists and listeners alike.
