Taylor Swift seeks trademark protection for her voice and image against AI-generated content

Pop superstar Taylor Swift has filed trademark applications for two short audio clips and one image of herself as part of her effort to protect her identity from AI-generated deepfakes. The filings, submitted to the US Patent and Trademark Office on April 24, 2026, are owned by her management company, TAS Rights Management. One audio clip promotes her album ‘The Life of a Showgirl’ on Amazon Music, while the other mentions the album’s pre-save on Spotify. The image Swift wants to trademark shows her onstage in a sequined outfit with a pink guitar. Swift’s voice and likeness have already been used in numerous AI-generated deepfakes, including fake endorsements, advertisements, and explicit content. Trademark attorney Josh Gerben, who shared news of the filings, explained that these trademarks aim to provide an additional layer of protection beyond existing publicity rights, particularly because AI can now create entirely new content that mimics her voice. Similar protections have been pursued by other celebrities, including Matthew McConaughey. Swift’s move highlights growing concerns in the entertainment industry about the misuse of AI to manipulate celebrity identities without consent or attribution.
