Paramount to Shut Down MTV Music Channels Across Europe by End of 2025

After 44 years of broadcasting, Paramount Global announced it will permanently shut down five MTV music channels across Europe by 31 December 2025. The affected channels include MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live. The shutdown will begin in the UK and Ireland before expanding to other countries such as France, Germany, Austria, Poland, Hungary, Australia, and Brazil. This decision is driven by cost-cutting measures amid a merger with Skydance Media and reflects a significant change in media consumption habits, with music fans increasingly turning to digital platforms and social media for music content. MTV’s legacy started in the US in 1981 and expanded in Europe from 1987, shaping pop culture, fashion, and music career launches through iconic content like Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ and MTV Unplugged. Although the TV channels will cease, the MTV brand will continue through digital platforms and major music events like the VMAs and EMAs. This marks the end of traditional music television as it was known for generations.
