Rick Allen on Resilience, Reinvention, and Def Leppard’s India Debut

In an exclusive interview with *The Hindu*, Rick Allen, the legendary one-armed drummer of Def Leppard, shares insights into his life, musical reinvention, and the band’s first-ever tour in India. Speaking after their maiden performance in Shillong, Allen reflects on his journey of resilience following the tragic car accident that changed his life. Despite losing an arm, he redefined rock drumming by creating his own technique with a custom hybrid drum kit that combines electronic triggers and acoustic elements, which helped shape the band’s signature sound on the 1987 album *Hysteria*.

Allen says his approach to drumming evolved naturally, as new neural pathways allowed him to adapt in ways that surprised even himself. Beyond music, he identifies as a father, husband, and philanthropist, emphasising that Def Leppard is more than just a rock band — it’s a platform for inspiration and positivity. Reflecting on spirituality, Allen recounts his personal connection with India that began in 2006 through Ashwin Srisailam, a wellness coach and former monk.
