Joyous Celebration Directors Dispute Financial Management as Group Marks 30 Years

As Joyous Celebration marks three decades in the South African gospel scene, tensions between its directors have come to light. Co-director Lindelani Mkhize has accused fellow director Jabu Hlongwane of diverting funds to personal accounts, restricting access to the Joyous Celebration Foundation’s banking records, and being secretive about finances. Lindelani also claims that both Jabu Hlongwane and Mthunzi Namba received performance fees for shows they did not perform. These issues are currently under review in an alternative dispute resolution application before the Companies Tribunal. Lindelani asserts that since March 2022, both co-directors expressed through their attorneys their intention to exit the corporation, yet Jabu continues to exercise control over the group’s bank account. Despite these accusations, Jabu maintains that their relationship remains intact and that all three directors still have ownership of Joyous Celebration. He adds that the group is evolving and legal processes are underway to resolve the disputes. The situation highlights governance and financial challenges even within iconic cultural institutions, showing that success on stage does not always equate to harmony in management.
