Albert Mazibuko bids farewell after 55 years with Ladysmith Black Mambazo

Albert Mazibuko, the veteran South African singer and long-standing member of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, passed away aged 77. He is celebrated for his remarkable contribution to the internationally renowned isicathamiya group, which was co-reformed in 1969 alongside Joseph Shabalala. Over the decades, the ensemble earned five Grammy Awards and performed with global icons including Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Dolly Parton, and Sarah McLachlan. Mazibuko concluded his stage career during the 2025 legacy tour, performing his final shows at the Joburg Theatre and Durban’s Playhouse. Reflecting on his farewell, he expressed gratitude towards fans, acknowledged the importance of younger generations in continuing the group’s legacy, and admitted the physical challenges of retiring after decades on stage. His final performances symbolised a transition for Ladysmith Black Mambazo, ensuring that the group’s rich musical heritage remains alive and influential for years to come.
