Wireless Festival director explains decision to include Kanye West amid controversy
The managing director of Wireless Festival, Melvin Benn, has defended the festival’s choice to feature Kanye West as a headliner in July, despite widespread criticism. The announcement has led to sponsors such as Pepsi, Rockstar Energy, and Diageo withdrawing support, following West’s past release of a song called ‘Heil Hitler’ and the sale of swastika-themed T-shirts. West later apologised, attributing some of his behaviour to his bipolar disorder. Benn emphasised the importance of forgiveness and giving people a second chance, describing it as a ‘lost virtue’ in today’s divisive society. He highlighted his personal experiences with mental illness in his family as shaping his approach. While stressing that the festival will not provide a platform for West’s controversial opinions, Benn noted that audiences will enjoy his popular music tracks already available on radio and streaming services. The UK government is reviewing whether West should be permitted to enter the country, reflecting the broader societal concern over his past antisemitic and pro-Nazi remarks. Benn called on the public to reflect on initial reactions of outrage and consider offering forgiveness, similar to his own approach. The festival maintains that its focus is on the musical performance rather than endorsing any of West’s past statements.
