Charli XCX Explores Gothic Themes with Wuthering Heights Soundtrack

Charli XCX has taken a bold artistic turn by creating the soundtrack for the new film adaptation of Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights. Co-writer and long-time collaborator Finn Keane, who previously worked with Charli on her Brat album and the Barbie soundtrack, described the project as a deliberate departure from her dance-oriented Brat era. Inspired by the darker, gothic themes of the film, they incorporated orchestral elements recorded at Abbey Road Studios, aiming for a raw and emotional sound. Keane even played a violin himself, intentionally creating scratchy, imperfect textures alongside professional recordings. Charli cited influences from artists such as The Cure, Kate Bush, and John Cale, who contributed to the soundtrack. The album features 12 tracks, including collaborations with artists like Sky Ferreira, blending cinematic scoring with Charli’s signature pop style. Both Charli and Keane emphasize that the project was driven by artistic inspiration rather than commercial expectations. The soundtrack is designed to complement the film’s visual intensity and emotional depth. Wuthering Heights premieres in UK cinemas on 13 February, with the soundtrack releasing the same day. Keane recommends viewers experience the film in cinemas for its dark and visually compelling storytelling.
