At the age of 91, Cape Town-born jazz legend Abdullah Ibrahim gave an unforgettable performance at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival (CTIJF) 2026, held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. Performing on the intimate Rosies Stage, known for its acoustic and traditional jazz sets, Ibrahim’s appearance stood out as one of the festival’s most anticipated highlights. From his very first chord, the veteran pianist transported the audience through his decades-long musical journey, merging personal reflection with South Africa’s complex social history. His set blended timeless compositions with delicate improvisations, reminding listeners why he remains one of the key architects of Cape jazz. Each note carried a deep emotional resonance, celebrating resilience and cultural pride born from the struggles of apartheid.

The evening also featured performances from Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse, whose energetic set on the Kippies stage had festivalgoers dancing to his classic grooves. Rising local stars such as lordkez and Rorisang Sechele brought modern sounds to the festival, blending R&B, soul, and jazz influences. Other acts included Jabulile Majola and The CTIJF Jazz Orchestra, Manana, and British saxophonist Jasmine Myra, adding further diversity to the lineup. By the end of the night, Ibrahim’s emotionally charged set was met with thunderous applause, reaffirming his enduring legacy as a national treasure and global jazz icon.
