AfroExchange and Johnnie Walker collaborate to expand Tanzanian music beyond borders
Dar es Salaam was buzzing as AfroExchange, in partnership with Johnnie Walker, gathered DJs and music creatives to discuss how Tanzanian music can reach international audiences. The dialogue highlighted the crucial role of DJs as cultural connectors and gatekeepers of music distribution. Participants pointed out that Tanzanian artists face barriers like limited exposure outside Tanzania, weak links with global streaming platforms, and branding challenges. However, digital platforms, social media, and the diaspora community were seen as opportunities to amplify local music globally. As a tangible outcome, selected Tanzanian DJs will perform at an event hosted by Nigerian DJ Consequence, creating networking opportunities and regional exposure. Organisers emphasised the need for long-term partnerships, skills development, and investment in music infrastructure to sustain growth. Collaboration between artists, DJs, producers, and policymakers is essential for creating an environment where Tanzanian music can thrive internationally. AfroExchange is positioning itself as a platform for meaningful engagement, aiming to make Tanzanian music a recognized sound on the global stage.
