AMOC Brings Innovative Opera Fusion to Lincoln Center Residency

The American Modern Opera Company (AMOC), an experimental ensemble of singers, dancers, and instrumentalists, has begun a residency at Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, running from mid-June through mid-July 2025. Their featured production, ‘The Comet/Poppea,’ marks its New York premiere and exemplifies AMOC’s bold, genre-blending approach. The work juxtaposes George Lewis’s adaptation of W.E.B. Du Bois’s short story ‘The Comet’ with Monteverdi’s baroque opera ‘L’Incoronazione di Poppea,’ creating a split-screen stage tableau that contrasts ancient Rome with modern New York. Directed by Yuval Sharon, the performance is described as an irreverent mash-up that explores complex themes of race, society, and the role of art in confronting difficult questions. The production is visually striking, with performers in eclectic costumes and a dynamic, rotating set. Anthony Roth Costanzo, a renowned countertenor and producer, leads the cast, expressing optimism and camaraderie as the show comes together.
