Billy Joel Suspends Tour Due to Diagnosis of Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus

Legendary musician Billy Joel has announced the cancellation of his upcoming concert tour across North America and England following a diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), a brain disorder caused by fluid build-up that can impact memory, concentration, vision, balance, and motor functions. In a statement posted on Instagram, Joel, 76, disclosed his condition and expressed regret for disappointing fans, while thanking them for their understanding.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, NPH is a rare and often difficult-to-diagnose condition. Symptoms such as difficulty walking, loss of bladder control, and cognitive issues can worsen without treatment. The illness is typically managed through surgery to install a shunt to drain excess fluid, along with physical therapy.

Joel’s team confirmed that his symptoms—particularly issues with hearing, vision, and balance—were intensified by recent performances. Doctors have advised him to refrain from performing while he undergoes targeted physical therapy, though a full recovery is expected.

In March, Joel had already undergone surgery and started therapy, though it was not initially clear if these medical issues were related to NPH. The singer concluded his long-standing residency at Madison Square Garden in July 2024, but had continued touring afterward. Ticket holders will receive refunds for canceled performances.
