Belfast Council Requests Urgent Meeting After Teen Dies at Emerge Festival

Belfast councillor Micky Murray has called for an urgent meeting between council officials and the organizers of the Emerge music festival following the death of a 17-year-old girl over the weekend. Murray emphasized that festivals should provide safe environments for attendees. The incident also led to two other people being hospitalized: a woman in her 30s, who remains in serious but stable condition, and a teenage boy, who is expected to recover fully. Police investigations are ongoing into the circumstances surrounding the teenager’s death, which occurred after she fell ill at the Emerge festival in south Belfast. The festival, an electronic music event held at Boucher Playing Fields, attracted over 40,000 attendees across Saturday and Sunday. During the event, police carried out seven arrests and issued thirteen immediate disposals, including fixed penalty notices, a caution, and community resolution notices. Local police were supported by specialized units such as air support, tactical support, dog section, and roads policing. Councillor Murray expressed condolences to the family and urged the public to avoid speculation while inquiries continue. Both Belfast City Council and the festival organizers have been contacted for comment regarding the proposed urgent meeting.
