In a candid interview ahead of Elbow’s headline performance for the Teenage Cancer Trust at the Royal Albert Hall, frontman Guy Garvey reflects on nearly three decades with the band, fatherhood, and the pleasures of everyday life. Speaking with characteristic humour and warmth, Garvey discusses Elbow’s longevity, their unsentimental friendship, and the sense of trust within the group that has sustained them through thirty years of music-making. The band continues to be one of Britain’s most respected acts, known for emotive anthems such as “One Day Like This” and their Mercury Prize-winning album The Seldom Seen Kid.

Garvey also opens up about his personal life in south London, where he lives with his wife, actor Rachael Stirling, and their nine-year-old son, Jack. He admits that fatherhood has changed his outlook on life, shifting his focus from himself to his family. The death of his father, Don, made him reflect deeply on family bonds and the inevitability of repeating generational patterns. Known for his mischievous wit, Garvey describes tour pranks and the importance of humility and connection on and off stage.

When asked about advice to younger generations, he offers a typically earthy take on embracing life’s joys, cautioning only against unkindness. Now settled but still creatively driven, Garvey seems content, proud of Elbow’s continued relevance and energised by the simple pleasures that inspire his music and life.
