Electronic Artists Collaborate on Album to Support Endangered Bird Conservation

A new music project called Shika Shika is turning environmental awareness into sound. Founded by Robin Perkins, a UK-born musician and environmental campaigner known as El Búho, the initiative blends electronic music with the calls of endangered birds. The project’s latest album, ‘A Guide to the Birdsong of Mexico, Central America & the Caribbean,’ follows an earlier volume focused on South America. This second collection pairs ten regional artists with ten threatened bird species, each song built around authentic field recordings from the Xeno Canto birdsong community and the Macaulay Library. The goal is to make listeners notice and care about species they may never have heard of, such as the Keel-billed Motmot from Nicaragua, the Ferminia from Cuba, and the Jamaican Blackbird. The music transforms these natural sounds into expressive, emotional tracks that elevate the birds’ voices to the forefront. All proceeds from the album go to conservation groups including BirdsCaribbean, La Asociación Ornitológica de Costa Rica, and Fundación TXORI in Mexico. To date, the Shika Shika series has raised over $30,000 for bird conservation, showing how creative collaboration can inspire both art and action for nature protection.
