Wireless festival maintains Kanye West performance despite controversy over antisemitism

The promoter of the Wireless Festival, Festival Republic, has confirmed that Kanye West, also known as Ye, is still scheduled to perform at the event, despite widespread criticism over his antisemitic remarks and calls for his appearance to be cancelled. West has previously expressed admiration for Adolf Hitler, released a song titled ‘Heil Hitler’, and sold a swastika T-shirt. His planned performance has drawn condemnation from UK MPs, Jewish organisations, and senior government ministers, including Bridget Phillipson and Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who described his remarks as unacceptable and deeply concerning. Melvin Benn, managing director of Festival Republic, defended the decision, emphasising that West will only perform his popular songs and not use the stage to promote his controversial views. Benn also highlighted his personal belief in forgiveness and second chances, citing his experience with mental illness in his own life. Jewish community leaders, including Phil Rosenberg, have criticised this stance, arguing that West’s past behaviour and the financial benefit to Wireless make the performance inappropriate. Sponsors Pepsi and Diageo have withdrawn support in response to the controversy. The UK government is reportedly reviewing West’s permission to enter the country, with calls from political leaders for stricter measures against antisemitism. West has not confirmed travel plans and has not performed in the UK since Glastonbury 2015.
