Bob Weir, founding guitarist and singer of the Grateful Dead, dies at 78 after battle with cancer

Bob Weir, a founding member, guitarist and vocalist of the legendary American rock band Grateful Dead, has passed away at the age of 78. His daughter, Chloe Weir, confirmed that he died peacefully surrounded by loved ones after struggling with lung complications and being diagnosed with cancer in July 2025. Born in 1947, Weir joined the Grateful Dead, then called the Warlocks, in San Francisco when he was just 17 years old. As one of the band’s two frontmen, he played a crucial role in shaping their distinctive sound that blended rock, folk, jazz and psychedelia. Weir was the voice behind ‘Truckin’’ and co-wrote several of the group’s enduring classics, including ‘Sugar Magnolia’, ‘Playing in the Band’ and ‘Jack Straw’. For three decades, he toured almost constantly, helping to build a devoted following known as “Deadheads.” Following the 1995 death of his bandmate Jerry Garcia, Weir pursued a solo career, notably leading his band RatDog and collaborating on various Grateful Dead reunion projects. He also formed new musical groups such as Kingfish, Bobby and the Midnites, Furthur, and Dead & Company in 2015. His death leaves drummer Bill Kreutzmann as the only surviving original member of the iconic San Francisco group, following the passing of bassist Phil Lesh in 2024. Weir’s influence on rock and improvisational music remains profound and enduring.
