Spotify has recently revealed its royalty payment model, shedding light on how African musicians are making millions from streaming. In 2025, Nigerian artists earned over $42 million, with their streams increasing by 140% over two years, driven by both local and international demand. This surge is not just from big stars, but also from independent musicians, with more than 1,500 artists earning over $1 million annually. The ‘Streamshare’ model means that artists get paid based on their proportion of total streams, so even smaller artists can make significant income if they reach a large enough audience. Nigerian artists have found massive success both locally and globally, with streams climbing 170% within Nigeria and increasing international attention, especially on playlists. This growth is also evident in the rise of Nigerian female artists, whose streams grew by 55%. The data shows that the number of artists earning substantial amounts is on the rise, with over 80 artists generating $10 million annually, while more than 13,800 artists earned at least $100,000 in 2025.
