Asha Bhosle, iconic Bollywood singer, dies aged 92 in Mumbai

Asha Bhosle, one of India’s most celebrated and prolific playback singers, has died in Mumbai at the age of 92, prompting widespread tributes across the country and the global arts community. Known for her extraordinary versatility, Bhosle recorded more than 12,000 songs across multiple Indian languages over a career spanning seven decades, earning her recognition as one of the most recorded artists in music history. She began singing professionally as a child and went on to become a defining voice in Bollywood cinema from the 1970s and 1980s, contributing to countless film soundtracks across genres ranging from romantic ballads to upbeat cabaret numbers.

According to family statements, Bhosle had recently been hospitalised in Mumbai due to a chest infection and exhaustion. Her son confirmed her death, with funeral arrangements expected to take place on Monday. Tributes have poured in from across India’s political and entertainment spheres, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, actor Shah Rukh Khan, and actor Hema Malini, all praising her cultural contribution and enduring legacy. Bhosle also toured Australia in 2016 as part of her farewell tour, performing to audiences at the age of 82. Her passing marks the end of an era in Indian music, with her voice continuing to resonate across generations.
