Kenyan Musician Overcomes Visa Challenges and Thrives in the USA

Gearrie Wainaina, a talented Kenyan saxophonist and MC, has shared his long and challenging journey to the USA. Back in 2010, he first attempted to get a US visa after being nominated for an award along with a group of artists, but the application failed because the forms were filled incorrectly and he had no strong ties to Kenya, such as family or a stable income. Over the years, Wainaina tried several times, including after getting married and having a child in the US. Eventually, after providing proper documentation including marriage certificates, his visa was approved, allowing him to visit the US in 2016. Today, Wainaina lives in the USA, actively working as a musician, MC, and music therapist, while also sharing the experiences of Kenyans in America through his Mkenya Marekani platform.
