MaWhoo’s Journey from Humble Beginnings to Metro FM Music Award Nominee
Local singer MaWhoo has rapidly become one of South Africa’s standout music talents, going from performing small gigs in 2022 to securing seven nominations for the 2026 Metro FM Music Awards. At 31, she is recognised for hits such as Bengicela, Uzizwa Kanjani, Thokoza, and Amabhoza, with nominations spanning Best Female Artist, Song of the Year, Best Dance, Best Collaboration, and Best Lekompo for Leskandi 2.0. MaWhoo shares that recognition is hugely meaningful to her, emphasising that people acknowledging her talent validates her years of perseverance. She recalls her early struggles, including travelling by taxi to gigs and waiting nearly two years for performance opportunities after her first song in 2019. Looking ahead, she is collaborating with international artists and preparing to release a new single on March 27, as well as hosting her own symphonic live event on May 9.
