MTV Ends UK Music Channels as Viewing Shifts Online
MTV, the pioneering 24-hour music television network, will shut down its remaining dedicated music channels in the United Kingdom after nearly four decades. Channels including MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live will cease broadcasting after 31 December, marking the end of an era for televised pop videos. The flagship channel, MTV HD, will continue to operate but will focus on reality and entertainment programming such as ‘Naked Dating UK’ and ‘Geordie Shore’. The closures reflect the changing landscape of music consumption, as audiences increasingly turn to platforms like YouTube and social media for music videos rather than traditional TV. Paramount, MTV’s parent company, has not issued an official comment on the decision. Founded in 1981, MTV played a defining role in popular culture, introducing video jockeys (VJs) and hosting landmark events like the premiere of Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ and the birth of the MTV Video Music Awards. Its UK channel, launched in 1997, boosted the careers of numerous presenters and later ventured into reality programming. Beyond the UK, similar MTV music channel closures are expected in several countries as Paramount seeks to achieve $500 million in cost reductions globally. This move follows previous layoffs and the closure of Paramount Television Studios earlier in the year. Despite declining viewership, MTV will maintain its brand presence through Paramount+ and social media platforms.
