Neil Young Acknowledges Unintentional Use of Bert Jansch Melody in ‘Ambulance Blues’

Neil Young, a prolific musician with a career spanning over six decades and more than a thousand songs, recently admitted that part of his song ‘Ambulance Blues’ unintentionally mirrored a melody by folk guitarist Bert Jansch. Specifically, the opening section of ‘Ambulance Blues’ closely resembles Jansch’s track ‘The Needle of Death.’ Young explained that the similarity was never intentional, occurring almost subconsciously while composing the song. He recalled that he only realized the overlap when someone else pointed it out and expressed regret for the unintentional borrowing. Throughout his career, Young has explored a wide range of musical styles, from folk harmonies in the 1960s to heavier guitar work that influenced the grunge movement. Like many artists of his era, he often performed cover songs as a tribute to influential musicians, including Bob Dylan and The Beach Boys.
