Malaysian rapper Namewee faces drug charges amid controversy

Malaysian rapper Namewee has been charged with illegal drug use and possession after being arrested in October. Known for his controversial songs that address taboo topics, Namewee was detained in a hotel room where authorities found pills believed to be ecstasy. The 42-year-old rapper tested positive for multiple illicit substances, including amphetamines, methamphetamines, ketamine, and THC. Despite the charges, Namewee has denied the accusations on social media, claiming he did not use or possess drugs. In his Instagram post, he stated that ‘the truth will be out when the police report is released.’ The arrest came shortly after a Taiwanese influencer, Iris Hsieh, was found dead in the same hotel room. Namewee expressed sorrow over her death and claimed the ambulance response was delayed. He also alleged that he had been blackmailed in recent days. The rapper has faced legal issues before, including a 2016 arrest for a controversial music video that critics said offended religious sentiments in Malaysia. His 2021 song ‘Fragile,’ which touched on sensitive topics like Taiwan’s sovereignty and the persecution of Uyghurs, was banned in China. Namewee now faces up to five years in prison and caning if convicted of drug possession.
