Sam Smith has unveiled a new single, ‘To Be Free’, released on July 25, 2025. The track, recorded during the sessions for their 2023 album ‘Gloria’, was left off the project but is now available for fans to enjoy. Smith described the song as a deeply personal work, created during a time when they felt a sense of freedom. The recording process was unique, with Smith and collaborator Simon Aldred performing a live, single take of the song with just vocals and guitar. ‘To Be Free’ is supported by a 22-piece choir, the TwoCity Chorus. Smith also shared the emotional journey of creating the song, reflecting on how it has been a calming force for them over the years. The accompanying music video, directed by (La)Horde, features the theme of rivers, inspired by Smith’s childhood home and their experiences with iconic rivers like the Thames and the Hudson River. To coincide with the release, Smith announced a 12-night residency in New York City at the Warsaw venue, running from October 8 to October 31, 2025. Tickets for the event will be available from August 1.
