Shaboozey pointed out the significant but often overlooked roles of Black musicians such as Lesley Riddle, Steve Tarter, Harry Gay, and DeFord Bailey in the genre’s development. He later deleted his initial tweet but continued to advocate for a more inclusive narrative, stating that the true history of country music is one of collaboration and unity across racial and cultural lines. The moment at the AMAs was particularly notable given ongoing national conversations about the Black roots of country music, highlighted by artists like Rhiannon Giddens and Beyoncé’s recent ‘Cowboy Carter’ album.
