Spotify Sets Record with £7.7bn in Royalties Amid Ongoing Artist Payment Debate

Spotify paid out a record $10bn (£7.7bn) in royalties in 2024, making it the highest annual payment from a single retailer in history. Despite this, concerns persist about how much of this money reaches artists and songwriters. Many musicians argue that streaming platforms do not provide fair compensation, with some Grammy-nominated songwriters boycotting a Spotify event in protest.

Spotify clarified that it does not directly pay artists but instead distributes royalties to record labels and publishers, who then pay musicians based on their contracts. Reports indicate that artists often receive only about 16% of a song’s streaming revenue. Although Spotify is not the only platform generating income for artists, streaming earnings remain a contentious issue.

The company’s ‘Loud and Clear’ report showed that the number of artists earning between $1,000 and $10m annually has tripled since 2017. However, dissatisfaction with streaming payouts remains widespread, as shown by a recent survey in which 70% of European musicians expressed discontent with their earnings. While Spotify continues to dominate the streaming market, debates over fair artist compensation are unlikely to subside anytime soon.
