Justin Hawkins reacts to brother Dan’s criticism of Yungblud and Aerosmith’s Ozzy Osbourne tribute
Justin Hawkins of The Darkness has responded to his brother Dan’s harsh critique of the MTV VMAs tribute to Ozzy Osbourne by Yungblud and Aerosmith. Dan had shared a critical video calling the tribute ‘a nail in the coffin of rock n’ roll,’ labelling the performance as ‘cynical’ and ‘nauseating.’ Justin explained in a YouTube video that Dan’s comments were a result of feeling ‘triggered’ by the performance, and he acknowledged the tribute’s attempt to honor Ozzy but critiqued its authenticity. Hawkins particularly pointed out Yungblud’s fashion choices and performance style, saying that his portrayal of rock ‘n’ roll felt more like ‘rock n’ roll seen through an Instagram filter.’ He argued that while Yungblud’s attire—featuring gifts from Ozzy Osbourne and Iggy Pop—was a nod to Ozzy, it lacked the same sense of humor and authenticity that made Ozzy a legendary figure. Justin also expressed frustration with the new generation of performers who, in his view, were trying to capitalize on Ozzy’s legacy without truly understanding the essence of the rock scene. Despite his criticism, Justin acknowledged that his views might be influenced by his long career in rock music and the industry’s changing landscape.
