Sió captivates Cape Town Jazz Festival with storytelling and soul
At the Cape Town International Jazz Festival, Johannesburg’s own Sió (Siobhan King) delivered a performance that was equal parts poetic, humorous, and soul-stirring. Opening with a haunting introductory poem, she immediately drew the audience into her world, blending literature with rhythm in a way that made her stage presence feel personal and authentic. Her set, which explored themes of love, heartbreak, and everyday life, revealed her as a multi-dimensional artist—at once witty, vulnerable, and deeply relatable. Known for collaborations with Jullian Gomes, Charles Webster, and her 2024 project Sarang / 사랑 with Daev Martian, Sió brought the same intimate energy to the live audience, balancing moments of deep reflection with light-hearted humour, including a playful jab at the woes of ‘short kings.’ Stripping away studio polish, her live performance emphasised raw emotion and storytelling, leaving the crowd not just entertained but emotionally moved. The experience highlighted how powerful a performance can be when it mirrors shared human experiences, turning the chaos of love and heartbreak into a compelling, soul-drenched narrative. By the end of the night, Sió had firmly cemented herself as one of South Africa’s premier storytellers in the house and neo-soul scene.
