Abdullah Ibrahim and the Spirit of Renewal at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival

The Cape Town International Jazz Festival 2026 once again transformed the Mother City into a global stage of musical and cultural dialogue. Held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, the festival brought together acclaimed artists from South Africa and abroad, including Abdullah Ibrahim, Yussef Dayes, Fatoumata Diawara, Sheila E., and Sipho ‘Hotstix’ Mabuse. This year marked a symbolic transition in leadership, as Dr. Iqbal Survé handed management of the event to his son, Rayhaan Survé, reflecting both continuity and generational renewal. The opening at the Youngblood Gallery blended fashion and art to appeal to a younger, interdisciplinary audience.

The festival’s emotional core lay in the contrast between reflection and celebration. Earlier, a visit to Robben Island reminded participants of South Africa’s painful past and its transformation through resilience and purpose. Later, the island hosted powerful performances by Yussef Dayes and James Mange, culminating in Abdullah Ibrahim’s deeply spiritual concert. At 91, Ibrahim embodied the continuity of South Africa’s musical and moral heritage, offering a performance that felt more like meditation than spectacle. His restrained piano notes and chant-like vocals evoked themes of struggle, endurance, and collective memory. In that silence, Cape Town’s soul resonated—the beauty and scars of history intertwined through jazz.
