Luukhanyo delivers a heartfelt and energetic performance at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival

Luukhanyo, the Gugulethu-born and Brooklyn-based musician, brought a wave of soulful energy to the Manenberg Stage during the second night of the Cape Town International Jazz Festival. Backed by his four-piece band, The Hii Rollers, he led a performance that blended contemporary R&B, hip hop, funk, and jazz into a seamless artistic journey. The show carried a sense of community, transforming what could have been a standard concert into a vibrant exchange between artist and audience. A trumpet solo evoked classic Cape jazz nostalgia while the keys and basslines danced in sync with the crowd’s enthusiasm. The rhythm section, anchored by electrifying drum grooves, paid tribute to the city’s deep jazz roots. Luukhanyo’s dynamic vocal range shone as he moved between poetic rap verses and emotive melodies, performing tracks from his 2025 album ‘LUCKY UU’. His lyrics explored identity, ambition, and self-discovery, connecting personally with festival-goers who resonated with his storytelling. The crowd sang along to his single ‘Hii Roller’, creating a collective moment that encapsulated the festival’s spirit. With a relaxed yet commanding presence, Luukhanyo reminded audiences why he’s seen as an influential voice in South Africa’s evolving music scene and a bridge between local tradition and global sound innovation.
