Musician and activist Tom Morello, former guitarist of Rage Against the Machine, has sparked controversy after criticizing a slogan seen during a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) press conference. The phrase, ‘One of ours, all of yours,’ was displayed behind DHS Secretary Kristi Noem while she addressed the media following the fatal shooting of an unarmed U.S. citizen, Renee Nicole Good, by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer in Minneapolis. Morello accused the department of using what he called a ‘verbatim Nazi mass murder slogan,’ claiming that similar wording was allegedly used by Nazi forces as retribution during World War II. He expressed his outrage on Instagram, describing the phrase as morally indefensible and urging political followers to reconsider their values. His post also included a photo of his guitar bearing an anti-Trump message and a reference to Ernest Hemingway’s ‘For Whom the Bell Tolls,’ drawing parallels to fascist ideologies. The DHS issued a swift rebuttal through a statement to Billboard, dismissing Morello’s claim as exaggerated and criticizing the generalization of labeling disliked narratives as ‘Nazi propaganda.’ While the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum confirmed the SS’s key role in the Holocaust, it has not verified whether the phrase cited by Morello indeed originates from the Nazi era. The controversy underscores Morello’s enduring activism on immigration and political justice issues, continuing even after Rage Against the Machine’s disbandment in 2024.
