Report Reveals Widespread Sexual Harassment and Assault in Scottish Folk Music Scene

A study conducted by the University of Glasgow has revealed that women in the Scottish folk music scene face alarming levels of sexual harassment and violence, including rape. The survey involved 409 women, most of whom were musicians, teachers, or students, and found that 81% had experienced some form of abuse. The reported incidents ranged from sexual comments and unsolicited advances to stalking and physical assault, with most perpetrators being fellow musicians. Researchers noted that these issues were often normalized within the male-dominated scene, with few consequences for offenders. As a result, some women left the scene entirely, representing a significant loss of talent. The study emphasizes that such harassment often occurs in social settings related to the folk scene, such as music sessions and post-performance gatherings. The report recommends measures such as implementing codes of conduct, appointing designated safeguarding personnel, and creating spaces to discuss gender equality and respect within the community. The findings will be discussed at Glasgow’s Celtic Connections festival, aiming to encourage meaningful action to protect women in the industry.
