Universal Audio Anthem Synth Review: A Classic Analogue Experience at a Premium Price

Universal Audio’s Anthem is a new software synthesizer that promises high-quality analogue sounds, offering features like dual oscillators, a low-pass filter, vintage effects, and a step sequencer. With three main modes—Mono, Unison, and Paraphonic—it aims to deliver fat basses, leads, and varied timbres. Its presets, numbering over 250, showcase everything from vintage effects to chiptune sounds. The sequencer allows for rich, evolving melodies, making it a versatile tool for music production. However, the $199 price tag raises concerns, especially since many DAWs come with similar virtual analog (VA) synths, and other plugins, like u-he’s Diva, are also priced similarly. While Anthem does its job well, especially for those already subscribed to UA’s Spark service, its asking price may be too high for those seeking just another VA synth. For Spark members, however, it adds another solid option to an already impressive collection of plugins, making the subscription look even more tempting.
