Grammy-winning songwriter Brett James, co-writer of ‘Jesus, Take the Wheel’, dies in plane crash

Brett James, the Grammy-winning songwriter best known for co-writing Carrie Underwood’s hit song ‘Jesus, Take the Wheel’, has tragically passed away in a plane crash in North Carolina. James, 57, was one of three people aboard a single-engine Cirrus SR22T when it crashed in a wooded area near Macon County Airport. Authorities confirmed that all three passengers on the plane were killed. James, who co-wrote ‘Jesus, Take the Wheel’, received a Grammy Award for Best Country Song for his contribution to the track. The song, also nominated for Song of the Year, became a significant milestone in both James and Underwood’s careers. Underwood expressed her shock at the loss, stating that she would never sing a song written by James again without thinking of him. James also wrote songs for several other famous artists, including Taylor Swift, Kelly Clarkson, Bon Jovi, and Jason Aldean. Aldean, who recorded the song ‘The Truth’ written by James, expressed his heartbreak, honoring James’ impact on his career. James’ contributions to country music were recognized with numerous accolades, including his induction into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2020. The National Transportation Safety Board is currently investigating the crash.
