BTS returns after four-year hiatus with ‘Arirang’, blending Korean tradition and modern pop innovation

The world-renowned K-pop group BTS has officially marked their comeback with ‘Arirang’, their first studio album in nearly four years. Featuring 14 tracks, the record weaves traditional Korean musical motifs with global pop and hip-hop elements. The album’s title references the beloved Korean folk song ‘Arirang’, known for its themes of longing and love, symbolising the band’s return to their cultural roots while pushing forward creatively. The group—RM, Jin, Jimin, V, Suga, Jungkook, and J-Hope—uses this project as a reintroduction following their mandatory military service, showcasing a renewed sense of artistry and cohesion.

Musically, ‘Arirang’ traverses a wide soundscape, opening with energetic trap and hip-hop tracks reminiscent of BTS’s early days before transitioning into experimental pop, R&B, and rock-infused ballads. RM serves as the main creative force, credited on nearly every song, with songwriting and production contributions from all members. Collaborations with high-profile producers such as Mike WiLL Made-It, Ryan Tedder, Kevin Parker (Tame Impala) and Diplo add an international flair. Notable songs include ‘Body to Body’, ‘Merry Go Round’, and ‘Into the Sun’, blending emotional depth with innovative production.

‘BTS’ new album reflects maturity and authenticity—eschewing past English-language pop hits like ‘Butter’ or ‘Dynamite’ in favour of bilingual tracks that reaffirm their global standing while celebrating Korean identity. ‘Arirang’ represents a confident return for the supergroup, balancing introspection and ambitious sound design.
