An All-Female Opera Explores Corporate Control and Survival on Mars
Composer Jennifer Walshe, together with librettist Mark O’Connell, has created an opera centered on an all-female mission to Mars that explores themes of power, isolation, and humanity’s future in space. The opera follows four astronauts—named after pioneering women in space—on a 140-million-mile journey to establish a water source for a Martian commune. Upon arrival, they discover their mission has been hijacked by a libertarian billionaire’s corporation, Shadowfax Ventures, bringing corporate authoritarianism and hostile ideologies into the new world. The opera combines rigorous scientific research on space travel and Martian conditions with speculative questions about fertility in low gravity, communication delays, and potential alien life. Sonically, Walshe incorporates sounds recorded from space, such as rocket launches and ambient noises inside the International Space Station, alongside synthesisers and AI-generated music to represent the antagonist. The work reflects current outer space developments, tech billionaires’ ambitions, and broader cultural anxieties about colonization and corporate power. Ultimately, despite dystopian elements, the opera delivers a message of resistance, hope, and collective action in facing cosmic and earthly challenges.
